Markunas, Cottage #11
Rick & Marianne purchased the cottage from Harry & Dorothy Ayer on April 18, 1990.The Ayers "snapped it up" in the fall of 1978 when it was the Ira Chaffee cottage.
Prior to owning Cottage #11 Harry & Dorothy Ayer owned the little yellow one (lot #3) between Taylor and Barrett (formerly Palombo).
Before owning Cottage #11, the Markunases had been coming to Highland Lake as guests of Dr. & Mrs. Michael Rizzuto and their daughter Melanie.
Cottage #11 dates back to at least 1949--the date scribed in the concrete pad in the pump house. A sign on the enclosed porch proclaims it The Catbird Seat, an apt description given its spectacular view and proximity to the water. Some days when sitting on the porch it's like being at an aquarium. And, it's a great place from which to watch fireworks!
In 2002 Cottage #11 got a facelift! The white clapboards were replaced with cedar shake vinyl siding. Blue board insulation and a vapor barrier were added. All 27 windows were replaced and upgraded from storm windows to energy efficient replacement windows. The entrance door was replaced with one featuring a beautiful leaded glass panel. Two new storm doors were also added. Recently the old outhouse at the back of the property near the road was replaced with a new one, custom-built by our friend PJ. While it still needs some finishing touches, it has several unique features including electricity and a tile mural. And, as we are always asked, it is a one-seater.
